Obituary for Frederick William Curtis
Fred died in Ipswich Hospital on Saturday 29 March 2014 after a number of years of failing health. He was a founder member of the Ipswich Branch and the number of members with the Felixstowe Branch at his funeral was a measure of the respect and affection in which he was held.
He was a devoted family man and a staunch and loyal member of the branch and the Association. He became a regular on the annual regimental pilgrimages and again became respected by the wider regimental family.
Fred served from 1945 – 1947, joining the Suffolk Regiment, but when he was still in training he was transferred to the Royal Norfolk Regiment where he served the rest of his time. He was posted to Germany and being an expert shot he undertook escort duties to the prisoners travelling to and from the Nuremburg Trials. He was then deployed to Operation “Woodpecker” in the Hartz Mountains. This was to provide timber to Britain as part of the reparations for the damage caused during the war.
In 1947 he returned to the UK and completed his service at Fornham Park, near Bury St Edmunds where he escorted German POW’s as far as Holland on their way back to Germany.
